Malabar Update 2022

What a year since our last update!

2021 Brahman Week came and went amazingly fast – a good result with all bulls sold with a strong average of $15,900.
We continued to receive abundant rainfall with a fabulous start to the season.

Our AI programs provided for some continued use of Banana Station Manly 69, Tarramba Eastern Eagle 3700 and Malabar Calibre Power, along with some new sire options in Fairy Springs J Red Rio and M2 BRC Captain 518/1.

This last bull, M2 BRC Captain 518/1 was acquired, via semen rights, from Brandon and Rachel Cutrer of BRC Ranch, in partnership with PB Fenech Grey Brahmans and Omega S Brahmans. Even though we couldn’t get over to the US to see him prior to the purchase, we liked his look, the natural movement and muscling, his clean underline and moderation.

We have some red calves on the ground that are weeks old, showing great calmness with good frame. We are excited to see them develop, with the next drop arriving soon.

Our IVF program included Captain and we also utilised NCC Red Odyssey – with calves due late September and November 22.

Around the time our IVF programs were being set up, our youngest son, Christian, was playing 7’s for his club, Wests Bulldogs at Toowong, and tore his ACL in his knee – which meant that his rugby career was going to have a year off.  A devastated young man – and we could feel both the physical and mental pain he was going through at that time.

Surgery happened in December and Christmas/New Year was spent on crutches.  Good news is that he has done his rehab well, and is back running and gym work, with a great anticipation to playing again next year.

Christmas was at Mooloolaba this year – great rest but it goes so fast.

Good news to start the year – Michael (our oldest) gained an apprenticeship with a farrier at Eagle Farm – and is keen as mustard.  He is really looking forward to learning this craft and working in the equine industry.

Our 2021 calves are looking great and even though there is more mud than you can jump over, it is time to get weaned.

Pablo and Eastern Eagle have done a great job and some of the young ones coming through are looking promising.

Shout out to Troy and Tracey Nuttridge of TLC Fitting Service, who have halter broken a bunch and looked after our show cattle, with outings both locally, Toogoolawah Feature Show and the Ekka.

Brahman Week is just around the corner and the bulls are ready to go – vet checks and semen testing done, with just the scanning to do.
